Wallis House - Ottawa Condo
Built in 1873, this building originally served as the Carleton Protestant General Hospital until 1924, when it bacame a seminary. In 1943 it was acquired by the Royal Canadian Navy and used for a variety of purposes, including as a recruiting centre during the Korean War.
Declared a surplus by the Department of National Defence in 1990, the city's Public Works department was then charged with its disposal. It was to be destroyed until concerned citizens and heritage groups rallied for its survival and it was sold to a conglomerate of developers and converted to loft condominiums.
As one of Lowertowns finest addresses, the Byward Market, downtown core and Parliament buidlings are all at arms length. Parks, schools and shopping are all available nearby, and what is not is easily accessible by OC Transpo routes 14, 15, 18, 2, and 306 which stop nearby.
