Fitzroy Harbour Location Map
Fitzroy Harbour is a small community located 40 minutes west of the City of Ottawa, on the south bank of the Ottawa River where it meets the Carp River.
A branch of the Mississippi River also empties into the Ottawa River west of the village. Where there is a small hydroelectric dam, there once was Chats Falls on the Carp River.
Founded by Charles Shirreff in 1817, Fitzroy is steeped in history.
By 1840, the community was a bustling tourist town with a large hotel and many businesses. Shirreff established St. Andrews United church as well as the first school.
Shirreff spent the better part of his life lobbying for the British Empire to finance a canal system that would have pre-empted the Rideau Canal.
If the canal had been located in Fitzroy, it would have been likely that it would have been named the nations capital. Once thwarted, however, Shirreff was bankrupt and died before Ottawa was named the nations capital.
Fitzroy Provincial Park is located nearby, and provides plenty of recreational amenities for the towns’ residents. The Fitzroy Harbour Community centre has a capacity of over 200, complete with a kitchen and licensed bar. It contains a branch of the Ottawa Public Library, a Seniors Room, and a meeting room.
Outside, there is an outdoor skating rink, two softball diamonds, and a soccer field complex. Formerly a part of the Fitzroy Township, the community is considered part of the city of Ottawa, since the mass amalgamation in 2001.
