Brockville, Ontario Location Map
Located on the St. Lawrence River, between Montreal and Toronto, the town is ideally situated within easy driving distance to Ottawa and all of Eastern Ontario. Brockville is one of the oldest and most beautiful communities in Ontario. It is the eastern gateway to the infamous and majestic thousand islands, with accessible waterfronts to many of Canada’s historical treasures.
First settled in 1785, Brockvill is a Loyalist community, which played a significant role in the growth of our county. As early as 1830, the people demanded having an elected Board of Police to govern the people. On January 28th, 1832, Brockville became the first village in Upper Canada to receive the status of a self governing community, establishing it as a ‘Police Village’.
Early industry included sawmills, tanneries, saddleries, tinsmiths and shipbuilders, becoming well established in the late 1700’s, and then enabling rapid growth in the early 1800’s.
It’s location on the St. Lawrence River and the Grand Trunk Railway allowed businesses to export and import materials, rapidly accelerating the establishment of larger businesses like the McNaughton Brewery, two wharves and the James Smart Manufacturing Company. The main street, King Street, became the hub of the population growth, with many shops and services as well as hotels.
Today, several distinctive monuments remain, but none as evocative as Canada’s Oldest Railway tunnel. Constructed between 1854 and 1860, steam locomotives traveled through the Brockville tunnel for almost 100 years. The City Hall was literally on top of the tunnel, constructed there between 1862 and 1864. Several efforts are currently being made to preserve Brockville’s oldest historical sites, such as the village Green, the Sir Isaac Brock Pedestal, and others.
Brockville is host to countless festivals, events and activities, attracting significant tourism to the area each year. During the summer months, people flock to Brockville to boat, fish, sail, camp, scuba dive, cycle, hike, or golf at one of five local courses and another 35 within an hours drive. In winter, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, ice fishing, hockey, or skating keeps everyone enjoying the spectacular location and warm community setting.
