Old Ottawa South is one of the most comfortable and character filled neighbourhoods in the city. Situated just south of the Rideau Canal, it is bordered to the south and east by the Rideau River and to the West by Carleton University.
Primarily a middle class area, it's proximity to Carleton University has made it a haven for professors and students, although rising housing prices are driving out the latter. Many of Ottawa's most eclectic and charming amenities are located on Bank Street, which runs along the eastern side of the neighbourhood. Several restaurants, pubs, antique stores, and the Mayfair Theatre are nearby.
As well, the Ottawa Folklore Centre supports the communities’ vibrant music scene, which is commemorated in sidewalk inlays by the way of musicians' names inscribed on metal maple leaves. There are several institutional and residential buildings in the area that are included on Ottawa's heritage list.
Notable structures include Hopewell Public School, Southminster Church, St. Margaret Mary Church, Trinity Church, the former Precious Blood Convent (now The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada), and the Old Fire hall (currently a community centre).
A public library and vibrant community groups also support the community with services like OSCAR, the community newspaper. With its relative proximity to the Rideau Canal, and Rideau River, there is plenty of park and recreational space available for residents. Downtown is a quick drive away, and the 417 is easily accessed for direct routes to the east and west. OC Transpo runs regularly down Bank Street, and offers routes 1 and 7 with nearby stops.
