Nepean Location Map
Nepean was a local municipality adjacent to the City of Ottawa, until 2001 when it was amalgamated along with 10 other municipalities. Although it, and its respective neighbourhoods are included in the City of Ottawa, the name is still commonly used to define this part of the city.
Although loosely defined, the area extends from Baseline Road south, and west of the Rideau River to include communities like Barrhaven, Bells Corners and Kanata.
Originally defined as Township D, Nepean Township was first designated in 1792, named after Sir Evan Nepean, British Under Secretary of State for the Home Department, eventually being incorporated as a city in 1978. Throughout its existence it constantly experienced geographic flux, with its centre starting in current day downtown, then in Westboro before it was annexed to the city in 1949. After that, its centre moved to Bells Corners, and stayed stable throughout the rapid development it experienced in neighbourhoods like Barrhaven and Centrepointe in the 50’s and 60’s.
Much of the area has experienced rapid growth in recent years, including many good shopping districts that benefit from Ottawa’s more restrictive shopping hours. There are a number of malls, including Bayshore Mall, Meadowlands and Merivale.
Nepean is home to a long list of smaller, mature neighbourhoods. Rideau View overlooks Mooney's Bay and Hog's Back, is a mix of townhomes and high-rise apartments. Between Fisher & the Merivale shopping district the communities of Fisher Heights, Skyline, Parkwood Hills, Carleton Heights and Fisher Glen. These communities are bounded on the south by light industrial land.
The neighbourhoods of City View, Ryan Farm, Meadowlands and Crestview lie between Merivale and Woodroffe, wrapped around Algonquin College campus. Further south and into the Greenbelt, are the smaller and more recently developed communities of Hillsdale, Tanglewood, Merivale Gardens and Grenfell Glen.
These neighbourhoods are close to the Baseline Transitway stop, which connects to downtown via the Ottawa River Parkway. West of Woodroffe Road, and centred around Greenbank are newer communities of Centrepointe (which also Nepean's Civic Square), Briar Green, Craig Henry, Manordale, Leslie Park, Trend Village and Arlington Woods.
These communities are very diverse, offering everything from single family homes to townhomes, and many rentals. Homes in this area tend to run $175,000 to $197,000.
The mature, elegant community of Qualicum features large lots and many executive homes. This neighbourhood is adjacent to the Queensway Carleton Hospital and the NCC Greenbelt. Qualicum and its neighbouring communities of Lynwood Village, Arbeatha Park and Westcliffe Estates are newer, and all share the amenities of nearby Bells Corners.
There are several rural communities that exist within Nepean’ borders. These include the several small neighbourhoods that sit on the west bank of the Rideau River, off Prince of Wales Drive, such as Hearts Desire, Rideau Glen and Clear View. Cozy Fallowfield Village is jut off Richmond Road is also included.
The area south of the Greenbelt include Barrhaven, which is now large enough to have several smaller neighbourhoods within it, like Pheasant Run, Fraservale, Knollbrook, Longfields and Davidson Heights.
Since it is such a young, family oriented community, there is a long list of schools spread throughout. !8 public elementary and 14 Catholic elementary schools, 7 public high schools and 4 Catholic high schools, as well as Algonquin College. Although Carleton University is not included, it is adjacent to the greater Nepean area
Built around the NCC Greenbelt, there is plenty of green space and recreational facilities. There are 2 Golf Courses, a driving range, three marinas, an equestrian park, toboggan hill, and two beaches along the Ottawa River. Hiking, cycling and cross country skiing trails are found throughout the community, mostly within Pinhey Forest and Stoney Swamp parks.
Nepean is a large, comprehensive community with diverse character and settings. Each of its neighbourhoods are unique and provide a great place to live.
