By accessing OttawaLiving.ca, the user agrees to be bound by all of the terms for use and agrees these terms constitute a binding contract between the user and OttawaLiving.ca. These Terms of Use apply to all users.

Scams

Ottawaliving.ca provides an opportunity for the Ottawa public to post their home for sale or rent. Ottawaliving.ca does not take any responsibility for the accuracy of the information, nor it’s validity. If you are considering renting or purchasing one of the listings on ottawaliving.ca, you should get legal council, as well as do your due diligence to insure you protect yourself in the process of entering into a contract. There is some great information on the RCMP's site about fraud, worth a read before entering into any agreement.

You can protect yourself agains would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules:

• DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts on ottawaliving.ca
• NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
• FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
• DO NOT RENT HOUSING WITHOUT SEEING THE INTERIOR - in all likelihood that housing unit is not actually for rent
• DO NOT SUBMIT TO CREDIT CHECKS OR BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR A JOB OR FOR HOUSING UNTIL YOU HAVE MET THE LANDLORD/AGENT IN PERSON.

Typical ones we've run across on Ottawaliving.ca are that the so called owner of the rental unit is out of town so promises to send the key once you make a deposit. If that actually happens, we have seen it that they then say that someone else has offered to pay a full year up front, so if you pay 6 months in advance they will rent it to you... do not fall for this scam. If you can't meet with the landlord in person, see the appartment, please do not risk sending your money!

Internet scamming is on the rise, please inform yourself of possible problems. There's a great page with information on Craig's list, which clearly identifies some possible scaming scenerios... please take the time to read before sending money to anyone.
