Adjacent to its namesake, the Rideau River, Riverview is located southeast of downtown Ottawa, south of Industrial Avenue and north of Smyth Rd. Its eastern border is marked by St. Laurent Blvd. where it meets its neighbouring community, Sheffield Glen. Old Ottawa East neighbours on the west side of the Rideau River, and to the south, the neighbourhoods of Alta Vista. Like much of south eastern Ottawa, Riverview was once agricultural land belonging to the Township of Gloucester until being annexed by the city. In 1950, the CN railway along the Rideau River promoted community development, and flourished n the post war baby boom.

The growth continued with great variance, mixing large apartment buildings and lower class housing in the middle class neighbourhood. In recent years, newer, more homogeneous buildings have been erected to serve middle class and retired residents. Thanks to its south-central location, Riverview has become a health care services hub for the city. The Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Riverside Hospital, and Ottawa General Hospital can all be found in the vicinity. To cater to the retired community, the Rideau Veteran's Health Centre is also nearby, complementing the National Defence Medical Centre. A vibrant and active community, Riverview boasts a strong community association to support schools, businesses, and recreation. The association produces a free monthly publication, Riverviews, for distribution throughout the neighbourhood. This group also ensures proper maintenance of public areas, including the extensive green space found in Dale Park, Balena Park, Hurdman Park, Riverview Park, as well as Coronation, and Hutton parks. These recreational areas complement the breadth of schools found throughout Riverview which include not only public and catholic schools for all ages, but both elementary and high schools with purely French streams, an alternative education school and a Montessori school. A community centre, several churches and extensive shopping centres round out the amenities in this well established neighbourhood. With its emphasis on health care provision, Riverview is naturally well supplied with Transit. Three stations serve the area: Hurdman, Lycee Claudel and Smyth stations provide convenient access to all corners of Ottawa.
